Yunnan sits in China's southwest at elevations that rewrite the rules you'd expect from a subtropical latitude. The province sprawls from the Tibetan plateau in the northwest down to tropical river valleys near Myanmar and Laos, which means there isn't one Yunnan climate so much as a family of them. That said, the data for the province's heartland, anchored around Kunming and the central highlands, tells a consistent story: mild, largely sunny days year-round, with a distinct dry season running from November through May and a modest rainy season from June through September. Humidity holds steady around 70% throughout the year, which sits in the comfortable-rather-than-oppressive range, unlike the coastal provinces that bake in summer. What makes Yunnan's climate distinctive is the combination of altitude and latitude working in its favor. Kunming sits at roughly 1,900 meters and earns its "Spring City" nickname honestly. Even in what passes for winter here, afternoon temperatures reach 19°C (66°F), and summers never get uncomfortably hot. The rainy season arrives with the Southwest Monsoon but delivers far less drama at this elevation than in lowland China. June through August see the wettest months. Yet rainfall totals remain modest. More like reliable afternoon showers than the sustained downpours that define the monsoon experience further south. You'll often get an hour of rain and then sunshine again before dinner. The dry months from November through April are Yunnan's most photogenic, with sharp blue skies, low haze, and temperatures that swing noticeably between afternoon warmth and cool mornings. April and October are the transition months worth paying close attention to. April hits the warmest pre-monsoon peak at 29°C (84°F) in the afternoon. October represents the sweet spot as the rains fade, the air clears, and the terraced hillsides around Yuanyang remain deep green from the wet season.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
Yunnan is landlocked, so the beach question doesn't apply. Visitors seeking easy, pleasant days without weather anxiety will find November through March ideal. The highlands are dry, clear, and warm enough by midday without turning sticky. The pace in towns like Dali and Shaxi slows considerably outside peak seasons.
Cultural
March through May tends to suit this kind of travel well. Spring brings clear air and comfortable temperatures, highs around 26°C to 30°C (79°F to 85°F), and the countryside is vivid before summer crowds arrive. August has a second compelling window if you're interested in the Yi Torch Festival, one of Southwest China's most atmospheric annual events.
Adventure
October and November are arguably the finest months for trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge and the high-altitude routes around Shangri-La. Trails are dry after the monsoon clears, temperatures moderate to ideal levels, and the light at altitude during these months is exceptionally clear. April works well too, though pre-monsoon dust can reduce long-range visibility on higher ridgelines.
Budget
The weeks between the Chinese New Year holiday window and the spring increase in April represent the quietest stretch with the most negotiating room on accommodation. Mid-February through March sees fewer domestic tourists than summer or the Golden Week holidays, and Yunnan's reliable dry-season weather means you're not trading crowd relief for bad conditions.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Yunnan.

Year-Round Essentials
A light down jacket or fleece
mornings and evenings at Yunnan's altitude are cool even in summer, and the gap between midday sun and shade can be substantial.
Sunscreen with high SPF
UV intensity exceeds what you'd experience at sea level. Lip balm with UV protection is worth adding alongside it.
A reusable water bottle
helps at altitude where staying hydrated takes more conscious effort than travelers usually expect.
Comfortable walking shoes with ankle support
handle the uneven cobblestones of Dali and Lijiang's old towns far better than flat-soled sandals.
A compact daypack with a rain cover
serves double duty for monsoon showers and altitude-gain day hikes.
dry-season travel (November through April)
Clothing
Thermal base layers, A mid-layer, A windproof outer shell, t-shirt
Layering Tip
layering is the working system. Thermal base layers earn their keep during cold mornings, November through February when lows drop to 7°C-11°C (44°F-52°F). A mid-layer and a windproof outer shell handle evenings. April brings warm afternoons where a t-shirt works at midday. But that jacket is still needed before sunrise.
wet-season travel (May through October)
Clothing
lightweight quick-dry fabrics
Footwear
Waterproof trail shoes or sandals that handle wet cobblestones
Accessories
A packable rain jacket
Layering Tip
showers arrive fast and dry off almost as quickly at this elevation. Waterproof trail shoes or sandals that handle wet cobblestones are worth prioritizing over regular trainers that stay damp all day. A packable rain jacket takes up almost no space and proves its value repeatedly in June through August.
Plug Type
Type A, C, and I sockets
Voltage
220V and 50Hz
Adapter Note
a universal adapter with increase protection handles most international devices
